Cooking Is Full-Time Advancement!

With the changes in the Boy Scout Advancement program to include Cooking Merit Badge (Jan 1, 2014) as Eagle Required and to emphasize cooking in rank requirements, our Scouts should be looking to each campout as a chance to complete a cooking requirement.  If we have a campout without one or more Scouts in a Patrol working to earn a cooking requirement during the campout, we are missing a valuable opportunity.

Summary of Requirements
Please make sure to verify the details of the requirements as this is only a summary.

  • Help cook one meal. (Tenderfoot)
  • Plan and cook one hot breakfast or lunch.  (Second Class)
  • Plan and be head cook for one breakfast, lunch, and dinner. (First Class)

  • Plan and cook a breakfast, lunch, and dinner on campout.  One meal must be a trail meal. (Camping Merit Badge - Eagle Required)

  • Plan and cook 3 more meals at a campout.  Also, prepare and serve a dessert. (Cooking Merit Badge - Eagle Required)
  • Plan and cook 2 trail meals and a snack on a trail hike or backpacking trip. (Cooking Merit Badge - Eagle Required)

In all, each Scout achieving Eagle will
  • Help cook 1 meal
  • Plan and cook or be head cook for 12 meals
  • Plan, prepare, and serve 1 Dessert
  • Plan, prepare, and serve 1 Snack
If you have a Patrol of 6 Scouts, then the Patrol will need 73-78 meals - Scouts can share in helping to prepare the Tenderfoot meal - for all the Scouts to earn their ranks and Eagle Required Merit Badges.
